About Dawlish Community Trust

Dawlish Community Trust (DCT) is a volunteer-led group, created to build upon the success of the Market and Coastal Town Initiative (MCTI) in the town.

During the MCTI phase, public consultation took place at nine locations and drew in more than 1,000 people, both residents and tourists, and helped identify key concerns over economic and social conditions in the town. This was summarised in the Dawlish Strategic Action Plan 2005-15, which was the subject of further consultation with the public and stakeholders before being distributed to every household in the town.

The Strategic Plan identified five key projects and the Trust has been working hard to bring these to fruition. Our aim is to create change in the town that will address decades of economic drift and result in improvements to the social and employment experience of town residents and tourists, and the physical environment.

Under the leadership of nine volunteer trustees, and with the support of two part-time employees, we have worked in close co-operation with key advisors in statutory agencies including Devon County and Teignbridge District Councils, Dawlish Community College and the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA).

Volunteer Trustees draw on a wide range of business, managerial and community experience and include two Town Councillors. They attend formal meetings of the Trust as well as participating in working groups to progress identified tasks.

Our two part-time employees were appointed on two-year contracts following open advertisement and recruitment. Their function is to help deliver our Skills and Economy Development Programme.

Continuing public consultation is at the heart of our operations, as is close co-operation with stakeholders. We have recently updated our Strategic Plan and the Town Council has now adopted this as the official Regeneration Plan for Dawlish.
