Welcome to the website of Dawlish Community Trust (DCT)
DCT will use the advice from consultants yellow book ltd to initiate work with DCC, DTC, TDC and local traders to improve traffic circulation and control. This will determine the best course of action in key locations of the town and ensure action in one area does not having a detrimental effect in others. Issues to be addressed include traffic calming measures to improve pedestrian safety in the High Street and other areas; enforcement of parking regulations throughout the town (especially the policing of parking on yellow lines); and a review of the length of parking stays (including those of disabled bays). The project will improve traffic flow, decrease bottlenecks and congestion and improve traffic and pedestrian safety
DCT will work with DCC, DTC, TDC and local traders to introduce a co-ordinated signage scheme for pedestrians and vehicles in Dawlish. Signs are required to give information on the location of car parks, the sea-front, open spaces and parks. There is also a need for more signs giving information on the local areas, heritage, walks etc [See H6]. This will benefit locals and tourists who are often unaware of the cultural and historical importance of the area. Car parking is a real problem in Dawlish in summer with tourists unaware of the existence of other car parks outside the town centre. New signs in the Barton Hill area will help to address this. A co-ordinated signage scheme will allow tourists to find their way around the town, to car parks and areas of local interest. This is to be complemented by new tourist leaflets of the town centre available from the Tourist Information Centre and other outlets.
DCT would like to see a feasibility study undertaken to determine whether sites such as Barton Hill and the railway car park would be suitable locations for a new multi storey car park or whether a Park and Ride scheme would be a better option. Dawlish town centre lacks sufficient car parking in the busy summer months. Considerable congestion is caused and traffic flow is hindered, especially in high season, by drivers looking for parking spaces - to the detriment of local trade. The creation of a new car park or additional parking spaces would encourage locals and tourists to come into the town to shop and therefore benefit local businesses.
DCT supports the work being done by DCC to complete the link of the Torquay, Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Dawlish, Dawlish Warren, Exeter and Exmouth cycle route and to set up train/bike rides, secure storage at railway stations and bike hire. DCT stresses the importance of completing the link from Double Locks to Dawlish Warren. The route could also act as walkway which would be useable by the disabled and by families with children in pushchairs, and promoted in town centre leaflets.
