Contributing to the Local Development Framework

TDC is currently preparing its new form of Local Plan known as a Local Development Framework. The Dawlish Community Plan has been taken into account by the Council when preparing the Local Development Framework.

DCT proposes, in addition, the two specific recommendations outlined below.

(L2) Encourage leading supermarket to come to Dawlish (Support)

Purpose of the project

To improve turnover, footfall and employment in shopping in Dawlish by improving its performance as a shopping centre through the development of a new supermarket in Dawlish. To contribute to measures to reduce carbon emissions.

DCT will support a decision by TDC to grant planning permission for a new supermarket in Dawlish in an appropriate location. Ideally this should be occupied by one of the top four supermarkets. It is suggested that this would create 75 new jobs in the area, would stop people leaving the town to do their shopping and make them more likely to stay in the town to shop for other goods. The TDC Retail Study identifies a store of sufficient size to meet most family needs which will contribute to a major reduction of journey miles to supermarkets in Exeter and Newton Abbot.

(L3) Provide more new and more affordable housing (Support)

Purpose of the project

To provide high quality affordable housing for sale or rent to satisfy the demand in the area.

DCT supports Teignbridge District Council's efforts to find sites to accommodate new build affordable housing and to implement a renovation programme for older properties to provide affordable housing for local people.
